The Practice

What is breathwork, and does it actually work?

Breathwork is the practice of consciously directing the breath to support nervous-system regulation, emotional release, and somatic change. Different techniques use the rhythm, depth, and pace of breathing to shift the body out of chronic stress activation and create room for clarity, release, and grounded calm. It works in the sense that people consistently report real, felt shifts after a session.

Breathwork is not a medical treatment. It works alongside mental-health and medical care, not instead of it. It does not diagnose or treat any condition, and it works best as part of an ongoing practice.

What It Supports

Breathwork for anxiety, stress, and nervous-system regulation

Grounded, body-based support for what the nervous system is carrying, as a complement to medical or mental-health care.

Chronic Stress & Burnout

Conscious breathing can interrupt the chronic activation that keeps the body in fight-or-flight. For high-achievers, caregivers, and anyone in LA running at a pace their nervous system cannot sustain, a session can feel like the first full exhale in months.

Anxiety & Overwhelm

The breath gives the nervous system a direct input. When the body learns to breathe through activation rather than away from it, anxiety has less physical fuel. This is a practice that supports how your body responds to stress over time, not a cure.

Emotional Release & Stuck Feelings

The breath is the first thing to go when we are holding a strong emotion. A session creates the conditions for what has been held to move. Many clients describe it not as crying or drama, but as a quiet settling, a release without a story attached to it.

Breathwork supports clients moving through stress, overwhelm, and emotional difficulty as a complement to medical or mental-health care. It is not a substitute for professional treatment.

Your Visit

What a breathwork session looks like

Private, one-on-one, and shaped entirely to you. No workshop model, no room of fifteen people on a mat. Sixty to seventy-five minutes, paced to your nervous system.

1

You arrive and we take stock

A short intake shapes the session: what you are carrying, what you want to move, any physical or emotional history we should know about. This is also where we decide whether today calls for a breathwork-led session or one where breath layers into reiki and Pilates grounding.

2

Grounding and breath setup

We start gently, with conscious breathing at a pace your nervous system can work with. Not a high-arousal workshop technique. Paced to you, with pause signals built in from the start.

3

The breath session unfolds

As the breath deepens, the body often releases what it has been holding, physically, emotionally, or both. Your practitioner stays present and responsive throughout. Many clients feel warmth, tingling, a pressure-valve release, or emotional movement they have not been able to access in talk therapy.

4

Integration before you leave

Breathwork without integration is incomplete. We close with quiet, a check-in, and time to let the session land before you re-enter the day. Tea is available. You are not rushed out.

How We Work

Trauma-informed breathwork, and why it matters

Trauma-informed is a phrase many practitioners use. Fewer specify what it means in practice. At Word of Mouth, it means the session is paced to your nervous system, not to a protocol, and that the room stays gentle from start to finish.

  • Paced to your nervous system

We work at a pace your body can meet, not a fixed technique everyone follows. We do not push for cathartic release.

  • Explicit pause signals throughout

You can slow down or stop at any point. The signals are set up before we begin, so you are never guessing.

  • Touch is always consented

Any hands-on support is agreed before it happens. Hands-off work is equally available and just as effective.

  • Integration is built in

Time to land is part of the session, not an afterthought. If talk therapy has given you insight but the body still feels stuck, breathwork can reach where conversation has not.

What clients say

★★★★★

I had never done exercise as a complement to emotional therapy. That worked really well for me, and it was cool to feel strong, warmed up, and grounded in my body before tackling some bigger emotional issues.

★★★★★

By combining a mix of breath, body, mind and energy work all under one roof, in a single session, I am able to take care of myself as a whole being rather than doing maintenance on each of the parts individually.

The biggest lessons I have learned are that play and joy can be the foundation that supports us through the hard stuff, and that personal development and growth do not have to be painful.

Good Questions

Breathwork in Los Angeles, answered

Honest answers about how sessions work, who breathwork suits, and what it is and is not.

Yes, in the sense that clients consistently report felt shifts: a calmer nervous system, emotional release, more grounded presence, and often improved sleep. What we will not claim is that breathwork cures anxiety disorders, PTSD, or any medical condition. What we can say is that most clients who come in carrying stress or stuck emotions leave feeling lighter. Results vary, and sessions build on each other over time.
People with uncontrolled cardiovascular conditions, seizure disorders, early pregnancy, recent surgery, or those in an active psychiatric crisis should consult their provider before booking. If any of these are in your history, call us before booking at (775) 618-5531. Our approach is nervous-system-paced and gentle, but we would rather have the conversation first.
Breathwork is woven into our sessions rather than sold as a standalone modality, so there is no separate breathwork price to quote. If you want a breathwork-led session, call us at (775) 618-5531 and we will talk through the format and what the session cost looks like. We will not hide it behind a discovery call.
Yes. Changes in breathing pattern directly affect the autonomic nervous system, which influences heart rate and blood pressure. That is part of how it works. For most people, the shift is calming. For people with uncontrolled hypertension or cardiac conditions, it is a reason to check with your doctor first. We will ask about your medical history when you reach out.
Our approach is trauma-informed and nervous-system-paced, which means we do not push for high-arousal states. Many clients with anxiety histories do very well with gentle conscious-breathing work. If you have a PTSD diagnosis or a history of significant panic, tell us before your first session and we will shape the session accordingly. Breathwork is not a treatment for PTSD, and we would never position it as one.
In a workshop or group class, the facilitator is working for a room. They set a pace and a technique, and everyone follows. In a private session at our Melrose studio, the breathing technique, the pace, and the integration support are all shaped to you and to what your body needs that day. There are no other participants to keep up with or perform for.
Yes. This is essentially what every session at our studio already does. Breathwork opens the body, and reiki or sound healing then moves through what the breath has created space for. For many clients the combination is more effective than either alone. Ask us about the specific session format when you book.
