Choose therapy if
You're experiencing symptoms of a diagnosable mental-health condition, you're in active trauma or crisis, you want to use insurance for care, or you need clinical oversight or a diagnosis for any reason.
When you're stuck, exhausted, or ready to make a change, the first question is which kind of support helps. Therapy is provided by a licensed clinician trained to diagnose and treat mental-health conditions. Coaching is a complement to that work, never a replacement for it, focused on present-day goals and the nervous-system patterns that keep you from reaching them. Many people use both.

Therapy is provided by a licensed clinician trained to diagnose and treat mental-health conditions, working with past and current psychological concerns under state oversight. Coaching is a voluntary, goal-oriented practice focused on the present and future, with no diagnosis, no treatment plan, and no insurance billing. Both can go deep. Both can change your life. The difference is scope, credential, and what the practitioner is legally authorized to do.
At Word of Mouth, Jaime and Yonatan Elkayam offer holistic life coaching in West Hollywood. They are Certified Reiki Master Teachers, Certified Breathwork Facilitators, and Relationship and Life Coaches. They are not licensed mental-health therapists, and coaching here is built as a complement to therapy, never a replacement for it. This page compares the two honestly, so you can see which fits where you are right now, and why many clients use both.
Neither is a lesser version of the other. Here is what each one is actually built to do.
Provided by a licensed clinician who has completed a master's or doctoral degree, thousands of supervised clinical hours, and a state board exam. Therapists diagnose conditions from the DSM, build treatment plans, and use evidence-based modalities like CBT, EMDR, IFS, and psychodynamic therapy.
LMFT, LCSW, LMHC, LPC, PhD, or PsyD credentials, subject to professional oversight and licensing boards.
The right fit for a diagnosable condition, active trauma, persistent depression or anxiety, or any situation where clinical oversight matters.
Many therapy practices bill in-network, which can make it the more accessible starting point for some clients.
A future-oriented, action-focused practice working on goals, habits, decision-making, and the nervous-system patterns that keep you from where you want to go. Holistic coaching at Word of Mouth adds breathwork, Reiki, and Classical Pilates to that conversation, so the body gets the same attention as the mind.
Jaime and Yonatan are Certified Reiki Master Teachers, Certified Breathwork Facilitators, and Relationship and Life Coaches, not licensed therapists.
Sessions build accountability, structure, and a body-based next step for people who already understand their patterns.
Coaching works alongside therapy and medical care. It does not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions.
Many people do not have to pick a permanent side. Here is how to think about what you need right now.
You're experiencing symptoms of a diagnosable mental-health condition, you're in active trauma or crisis, you want to use insurance for care, or you need clinical oversight or a diagnosis for any reason.
You have a solid mental-health foundation and want to build on it, you're stuck in patterns you understand but can't shift through insight alone, or you want somatic and energy work alongside goal-focused conversation.
Many of our clients work with a therapist and come to us for the body-based layer. Therapy handles the clinical and historical material. Coaching handles the present-tense patterns and forward-moving practice. They rarely conflict, and they compound.
Coaching is a complement to medical and mental-health care, not a substitute for it. For clients who have done significant therapy work and want a body-based next layer, our Beyond Talk program assumes you already have a therapist. It does not replace them.
Honest answers about credentials, cost, and whether you can work with both at the same time.
A complimentary discovery call will tell you more than any comparison page can. We'll tell you honestly if coaching is the right fit, or if therapy is the better starting point, in-person at our West Hollywood studio or virtually.
Weekly integrative sessions blending reiki, breathwork, Pilates, and conversation.
