The seven chakras, explained without the jargon

Seven energy centers run through your body, from the base of your spine to the crown of your head. Most of us live whole years without checking in on a single one. This is a plain guide to what each chakra governs, how they connect to everyday stress and rest, and how reiki at our West Hollywood studio helps them flow.

What are the chakras, in plain terms?

In the energy-healing tradition, a chakra is a center of energy in the body. Seven main centers sit along the midline, from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each one is associated with a part of how you live: how safe and grounded you feel, how freely you create and feel, how clearly you speak, how openly you connect. When a center feels balanced, that part of life tends to move with ease. When it feels blocked or depleted, that same area can feel stuck, heavy, or loud.

You do not have to believe anything for this to be useful. Think of the chakras as a simple map for checking in with yourself, one region at a time. Below, each center in a sentence or two, so you can notice which one is asking for attention today.

Root to Crown

The seven chakras and what each one governs

One center at a time, from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.

Root chakra

Base of the spine. Safety, stability, and feeling grounded in your body and your life. When it runs low, you feel unsettled, anxious, or braced for the next thing.

Sacral chakra

Below the navel. Creativity, emotion, pleasure, and flow. When it is balanced, feeling and inspiration move easily. When it stalls, you can feel flat, numb, or creatively stuck.

Solar plexus chakra

Upper abdomen. Confidence, willpower, and a settled sense of your own agency. Low tone here can show up as self-doubt, overwhelm, or difficulty acting on what you know.

Heart chakra

Center of the chest. Love, compassion, and connection, for others and for yourself. When it opens, warmth returns. When it guards, you can feel isolated or hard on yourself.

Throat chakra

The throat. Communication, truth, and honest expression. When it flows, you say what is real with less friction. When it tightens, words feel stuck and honesty feels risky.

Third eye chakra

The brow. Intuition, insight, and clarity. A balanced center helps you see a situation clearly. A cloudy one can feel like fog, indecision, or second-guessing yourself.

Crown chakra

Top of the head. Awareness, meaning, and connection to something larger than the daily grind. When it is open, life feels spacious. When it closes, everything can feel small and literal.

The chakra system is a traditional framework for self-awareness and relaxation. It is complementary to medical and mental-health care, not a substitute, and it does not diagnose or treat any condition.

Hands-on reiki working with the body's energy centers during a chakra-focused session in Los Angeles
In a Session

How reiki supports chakra balance in Los Angeles

Reiki is a gentle Japanese practice that works with the body's energy field. In a chakra-aware session at our Melrose studio, your practitioner moves along these centers with hands on or above the body, helping the nervous system settle and energy move where it feels stuck.

  • We start with what you notice

A short conversation about where you feel tight, flat, or wired points to the centers worth attention that day. No script, no diagnosis.

  • Grounding before opening

Breathwork and a grounding pass settle the root and the body first, so the deeper work has something steady to rest on.

  • Hands-on and hands-off attunement

Warmth, a spreading heaviness, and a deepening breath are common as a session settles in. Many clients leave feeling lighter and clearer.

  • Time to land

We do not rush you out. Tea, a few quiet minutes, and a real check-in on what came up close every visit.

7 Days, 7 Chakras

A free email course to meet each center

The simplest way to get to know your chakras is one day at a time.

1

One short email a day

For seven days, a short email lands each morning, one center at a time. You will see what it feels like when that center runs low, and how to work with it.

2

A practice under five minutes

Each day includes a small practice you can do anywhere. No equipment, no experience, and nothing to buy. Just five quiet minutes with yourself.

3

The Morning Meditation, right away

When you begin, we also send you the Morning Meditation: eight minutes of guided stillness, composed and recorded by Yonatan.

4

Then only the occasional note

Seven short emails, one a day. After that you hear from us at most weekly, and you can leave any time.

Good Questions

Chakras and reiki, answered

Honest, plain answers about the energy centers and how we work with them.

No. The chakra map is a helpful way to check in with yourself, region by region. Whether you take it literally or simply as a language for the body, clients consistently report feeling calmer, lighter, and more grounded after a session. Come curious. That is enough.
Reiki works with the body's energy field and the nervous system to support relaxation and flow. Many people describe centers that felt stuck softening over a session or two. Reiki is complementary and does not diagnose or treat any condition. What we can honestly say is that most clients leave feeling more settled and clear.
Every session already moves along the body's energy centers. If a particular area is asking for attention, that is where we spend more time. We shape the visit around what you notice when you arrive, rather than following a fixed protocol.
No. Reiki and chakra work are complementary practices. They work alongside medical and mental-health care, not instead of it, and they do not diagnose or treat any condition. Many clients use reiki alongside talk therapy and find the combination useful.
