Compassion Fatigue · West Hollywood

Compassion fatigue: what it is, and how to recover

Compassion fatigue is the physical and emotional depletion that builds up from caring for others in pain, common among therapists, nurses, caregivers, and anyone who holds space for people professionally. It is not a personal failing, and it is not something willpower alone resolves. Word of Mouth supports recovery through body-based reiki, breathwork, and holistic coaching alongside your own therapist or supervisor, never in place of them.

The Short Answer

What is compassion fatigue? The short answer

Compassion fatigue is the gradual depletion, emotional numbing, and physical exhaustion that can build up in people who regularly care for others who are suffering. It shows up most often in therapists, nurses, social workers, first responders, and family caregivers, anyone whose work or life asks them to absorb someone else's pain on a regular basis. Unlike everyday tiredness, compassion fatigue tends to creep in gradually, and it can leave even deeply committed helpers feeling numb, irritable, or strangely disconnected from work they genuinely care about.

Compassion fatigue is closely related to burnout but not identical to it. Burnout is depletion from workload and organizational stress in general. Compassion fatigue is more specific: it comes from the empathic cost of repeatedly witnessing and absorbing other people's pain. Many helpers experience both at once. Compassion fatigue is a recognized, well-described experience in caregiving fields, not a psychiatric diagnosis, and it responds well to a combination of rest, support, and body-based recovery practices.

Recognize It

Signs of compassion fatigue to watch for

Compassion fatigue rarely arrives all at once. It tends to show up as a collection of smaller shifts.

Emotional exhaustion

Feeling drained by client or patient stories even when the work itself still matters to you.

Numbness or reduced empathy

A growing emotional distance from the people you help, sometimes felt as guilt for not caring as much as you used to.

Irritability

A shorter fuse than usual, at work and at home, that feels out of proportion to what actually happened.

Intrusive thoughts or replaying sessions

Client or patient stories that keep surfacing after hours, making it hard to fully switch off.

Physical fatigue & sleep changes

Tension, headaches, or disrupted sleep that tracks with a demanding caseload or care schedule.

Trouble separating work from home

Difficulty leaving the emotional weight of the day at the door, even during time meant for rest.

If you recognize several of these in yourself, you are not alone, and it is not a sign you are unfit for the work you do.

Our Approach

How body-based work supports compassion fatigue recovery

Talking through compassion fatigue is useful, and many of our clients are already doing that in therapy or supervision. What often does not shift through conversation alone is the empathic residue that settles in the body itself. Our holistic coaching programs work at that layer, alongside the professional support you already have.

  • Reiki & energy work

Hands-on or hands-off reiki supports the nervous-system layer where absorbed stress and secondary trauma tend to sit unspoken.

  • Breathwork

Conscious breathing practices regulate the nervous system directly, discharging what a day of holding space for others leaves behind.

  • Classical Pilates & movement

Functional movement restores grounded physical presence after time spent holding stillness for clients or patients.

  • Coaching conversation

Direct coaching around boundaries and sustainable practices, once the body is regulated enough to make use of it.

Good Questions

Compassion fatigue, answered

Honest answers about what compassion fatigue is, how it differs from burnout, and what kind of support fits.

Compassion fatigue is the emotional and physical depletion that can build up from repeatedly caring for people who are suffering. It is common among therapists, nurses, social workers, first responders, and family caregivers, and it tends to show up as numbness, irritability, and exhaustion rather than any single symptom.
Burnout is depletion from workload, pace, and organizational stress in general. Compassion fatigue is more specific to the empathic cost of absorbing other people's pain and trauma. The two overlap often, and many helpers experience both at the same time.
No. Compassion fatigue is a widely recognized experience in caregiving fields, but it is not a formal psychiatric diagnosis. If you are noticing symptoms of depression, anxiety, or trauma that feel clinical in nature, please speak with a licensed therapist.
Both can help, and they are not mutually exclusive. Our coaching addresses the body-based, nervous-system layer of compassion fatigue and works well alongside your own therapy or clinical supervision. If you do not have a therapist and are managing a diagnosed condition, we recommend starting there.
Anyone in a caregiving or helping role: therapists, nurses, social workers, first responders, hospice workers, and family members caring for a chronically ill loved one. It is an occupational and relational reality, not a personal failing.
The Nourished Healer is our 5-month coaching intensive built specifically for therapists and practitioners moving through burnout and compassion fatigue, combining reiki, breathwork, movement, and coaching. It requires an application and consultation call to confirm fit.
Please contact a licensed mental-health professional or a crisis line right away. Coaching and reiki are complementary practices and are not equipped to respond to a crisis situation.
