Distance Reiki vs in-person: same lineage, different container

Distance Reiki and in-person Reiki use the same Usui lineage technique and the same Intentional Attunement Process. What changes is the container: a private Melrose studio with warmth, scent, and sound, or your own quiet space from anywhere in the country. Word of Mouth offers both, and we will help you decide which format fits where you are right now.

The Comparison

Does distance Reiki work as well as in person?

Many clients report a felt sense of warmth, emotional release, and calm in both formats, and the energetic work itself is comparable. What a distance session cannot replicate is the studio container: the warmth of the room, the scent, the curated sound, and the physical presence of a practitioner. Both formats are real. They are simply different, and we will help you decide which one fits where you are right now.

Two Formats

Distance Reiki and in-person Reiki, side by side

Both run 60 to 75 minutes with a Certified Reiki Master Teacher and the same Intentional Attunement Process.

Distance Reiki

Distance Reiki uses a technique taught at Reiki Level 2, a Usui symbol that lets the practitioner direct energy to a recipient regardless of physical location. You lie down in your own space while the practitioner holds the intention and transmits, bracketed by a brief call at the start and close. Many clients describe tingling, warmth, and a body-heaviness that settles into calm, similar to what they feel in person.

In-Person Reiki

In-person sessions take place at our private Melrose loft in West Hollywood. You are welcomed with tea and a short check-in, then spend 60 to 75 minutes on the treatment table while your practitioner works with light touch or hands-off Reiki, often with curated sound underneath. The room itself, warm light, quiet, tea, becomes part of the session.

Which Fits You

Distance Reiki vs in-person: which fits you?

Both formats are complementary practices that support stress, sleep, and emotional regulation alongside medical and mental-health care, not in place of it.

Choose distance Reiki if you:

  • Live outside the LA area

Distance sessions are available to clients anywhere in the U.S., with the same technique and attention.

  • Have limited mobility or a demanding schedule

Caregivers, new parents, and clients managing chronic illness often find distance sessions more sustainable than travel.

  • Are touch-averse or working through trauma history

A no-touch format from your own space can feel more settling for some clients than hands-on work.

  • Want support between in-person visits

Many clients add a midweek distance session alongside a monthly studio visit.

Choose in-person Reiki if you:

  • Are trying Reiki for the first time

The full sensory container, warm room, tea, and curated sound, tends to help first-time clients drop in more easily.

  • Live in or near West Hollywood

Clients across more than 30 LA neighborhoods come to our Melrose studio for the in-person experience.

  • Want the physical presence of a practitioner

Some clients settle more easily with a practitioner in the room than with distance structure alone.

  • Have done a distance session and want the comparison

Trying both formats is the clearest way to learn which one you respond to.

Many clients find the most sustainable cadence is one in-person session a month and one distance session in between, the studio visit for a full reset and the distance session to maintain the thread.

"As a licensed clinical mental health therapist as well as a Reiki practitioner for over two decades, my experience with Word of Mouth was profoundly nurturing as well as professional and poignant. I walked away wiser and calmer, more present and uplifted." (Hyim Ross)

Good Questions

Distance Reiki vs in-person, answered

Honest answers about how distance sessions work and how to choose between the two formats.

Many clients report feeling warmth, tingling, or emotional release during distance sessions, comparable to what they feel in person. The mechanism is not fully explained by conventional science. We share what clients describe and do not over-claim. Most people who try it are surprised.
The energetic work is comparable. What changes is the container: in-person sessions add warmth, scent, sound, and physical presence, while distance sessions remove those cues. For some people, being in their own space actually helps them relax more easily. Individual experience varies.
A brief video or phone call at the start and close is standard. During the session itself, you do not need to be on camera. Many clients prefer to be off-screen, phone down, lights low, lying still.
Most clients report at least a subtle body response: warmth, a sense of heaviness, or emotional release. A few feel nothing in a first session and more in a second. Individual experience varies, and we do not promise a specific felt outcome.
No. Distance sessions are available to clients anywhere in the U.S. In-person sessions take place at our West Hollywood studio on Melrose.
Yes, and many clients do. In-person once a month plus a distance session midweek is a common cadence. The two formats complement each other rather than competing.
