Reiki vs Massage · West Hollywood

Reiki vs massage in Los Angeles: which one does your body need?

Reiki and massage both ease stress, but they work on different layers of the body. Massage releases tension held in muscles and soft tissue through hands-on pressure. Reiki works with the nervous system and the body's energetic field through light touch or hands-off attunement. If tight shoulders and a sore back brought you here, massage may be the better first call. If it is stress, anxiety, grief, or a mind that will not settle, reiki reaches a layer massage was never built to touch.

The Comparison

Is reiki better than massage?

Neither is better. They ease stress through different mechanisms, and the right choice depends on what your body is holding. Massage therapy works on muscles, fascia, and soft tissue through hands-on pressure, kneading, and stroke work. It is the right tool for mechanical tension: a sore back, tight shoulders, stiff joints, or recovery after training.

Reiki works differently. A Certified Reiki Master Teacher uses light touch or hands-off technique to work with the body's energy field and support the nervous system's own capacity to settle. It tends to help when the tension is not purely muscular: stress and anxiety that does not fully resolve with bodywork, grief, burnout, disrupted sleep, or a mind that will not quiet down. Many clients use both, on different days, for different reasons.

Side by Side

What each practice actually offers

Two different approaches to easing what a hard season leaves behind.

Reiki

Light touch or hands-off energy work with a Certified Reiki Master Teacher, fully clothed on a table. Sessions run 60 to 75 minutes.

Best for stress, anxiety, emotional release, disrupted sleep, grief, and burnout, the layer that often sits underneath muscle tension.

Massage Therapy

Hands-on soft-tissue work, Swedish strokes, deep tissue pressure, or sports massage, performed by a Licensed Massage Therapist (CMT).

Best for mechanical muscle tightness, chronic pain, limited range of motion, and pre- or post-training recovery.

Choose Reiki If...

When reiki is the better fit

Reiki tends to help when the tension you are carrying is not purely physical, or when bodywork alone has not fully resolved it.

  • Stress that bodywork has not resolved

Your shoulders release in massage, then tighten back up within a day or two. Reiki works with the nervous system underneath the muscle.

  • Emotional exhaustion or feeling stuck

Flat, wrung out, or cycling through the same hard feeling. Reiki's light touch works with the emotional layer, not just the physical one.

  • Grief, burnout, or a difficult season

Reiki supports the nervous system through transitions that bodywork was not built to address.

  • Disrupted sleep or a mind that will not quiet

Racing thoughts and tired-but-wired nights respond well to reiki's nervous-system focus. Read more on reiki for sleep.

  • A preference for light touch, or none at all

Fully clothed on a table, no oil, no undressing. Hands-on and hands-off both work.

Choose Massage If...

When massage is the better fit

Massage is worth choosing whenever the tension is mechanical, in the muscles and connective tissue rather than the nervous system.

  • Muscle tightness, soreness, or an old injury

Massage's hands-on pressure reaches mechanical tension that reiki's light touch is not designed to address.

  • Limited range of motion or joint stiffness

Deep tissue and neuromuscular technique loosen what has been locked up for a while.

  • Athletic training or recovery

Pre- or post-training bodywork helps muscles recover and perform.

  • A need for a Licensed Massage Therapist

Insurance documentation or a clinical referral usually requires a CMT, not an energy practitioner.

Good Questions

Reiki vs massage, answered

Honest answers about cost, comfort, and what each practice can and cannot do.

Reiki and massage both reduce stress, but they work differently. Massage relieves physical muscle tension. Reiki works on the energetic and emotional layer, the stress that lives in your nervous system after the muscles relax. For anxiety or emotional exhaustion, clients often find reiki reaches a layer massage does not.
No. Reiki is done fully clothed on a treatment table. You do not remove clothing, and no oil is used. Wear comfortable layers. Light touch or hands-off technique is used throughout.
Most clients feel warmth, tingling, or a deep body heaviness during a session. One client described it as a pressure valve being released. Effects vary, but feeling nothing at all is uncommon.
Yes. They work on different systems and do not interfere with each other. Many clients book massage with a licensed therapist and reiki with us in the same week for full-spectrum support.
Reiki sessions at Word of Mouth are $150 for 60 to 75 minutes, and we publish that price upfront. Massage therapy in Los Angeles commonly runs $100–$200 depending on modality, therapist, and session length. We do not offer massage ourselves, so ask your therapist directly for their current rate.
Reiki is used alongside conventional care, not as a substitute for medical or psychological treatment. Many clients with trauma histories find the hands-off option especially supportive. Always continue working with your mental health provider.
Reiki is a complementary practice and is not a treatment for MS, a pacemaker, or any medical condition. It uses no electrical current, devices, or physical pressure, and may support nervous-system relaxation alongside your medical team's care. Always consult your doctor before your first session.
