The Short Answer

What is a sound bath, exactly?

A sound bath is an immersive sound experience. You lie down, fully clothed, close your eyes, and let waves of sound and vibration from instruments like singing bowls, gongs, tamboura, chimes, and live music move through the room and through you. Nothing touches you, and there is nothing you need to do. The practitioner plays; you simply receive. A typical sound bath runs 60 to 90 minutes, and most people leave in a deeply relaxed, almost dream-like state that many describe as a reset for the nervous system.

The name is literal. You are bathed in sound. Where a massage works on the body through touch, a sound bath works through hearing and physical vibration, guiding the body out of its wound-up, day-to-day alertness and into rest. Sound healing is a complementary practice. It works alongside medical and mental-health care, not instead of it, and it does not diagnose or treat any condition. At Word of Mouth in West Hollywood, every sound bath is a private, one-on-one session shaped to the person on the mat, with Certified Reiki Master Teachers Jaime and Yonatan Elkayam.

What to Expect

What happens in a sound bath

The arc of a session is simple by design. Here is what a private sound bath looks like at our Melrose studio, start to finish.

1

You arrive and settle in

You are greeted with warmth and a ceremonial tea in the private loft. No rush and no clipboard. A few quiet minutes to land before anything begins.

2

A short breath setup

Conscious, guided breathing opens the body and calms the nervous system before the sound begins. Gentle and paced to you. You stay fully clothed and lie down on the treatment table.

3

The sound bath begins

Live instruments surround you: singing bowls, gongs, chimes, tamboura, piano, vocals, and ocean drums. The sound moves through the body, not just around it. Many clients notice a pressure-valve release within the first ten minutes.

4

You close slowly

A few quiet minutes to return to the room before we check in. The tea is still warm. Nothing about the ending is jarring, and you do not need to go anywhere immediately.

If you drift off during the sound, that is welcome. It means your nervous system has taken over, which is exactly what the session is working toward.

The Instruments

What makes the sound in a sound bath

A sound bath is built from live, acoustic instruments, each chosen for the way its tone and vibration move through the body. No two studios use exactly the same palette. Here is what fills the room at ours.

  • Singing bowls

Metal and crystal bowls produce sustained, layered tones. Crystal bowl sound healing is one of the most recognizable elements of a modern sound bath.

  • Gongs and chimes

The gong creates a full-body wash of sound, while chimes and bells add bright, shimmering texture that helps the mind let go.

  • Tamboura, piano, and live vocals

Drawing on 30 years of musical and vibrational study, Yonatan layers tamboura, piano, ocean drums, and voice into a live composition made in the moment, never a recording left to ring on a shelf.

  • Breathwork woven in

Guided breathing settles the body before and during the sound, so the vibration lands in a nervous system that is already beginning to soften.

You may also hear about sound healing with tuning forks. Practitioners each build their own toolkit; the instruments above are the ones we play in the studio.

What It Supports

What a sound bath can support

People come to a sound bath for different reasons. These are the shifts clients most often describe, as a complement to medical or mental-health care.

Stress & Anxiety

The vibration of live instruments can support a relaxation response, easing the chronic activation that keeps many LA residents wound tight. Many clients describe a pressure-valve release after a single session.

Sleep & Rest

When the nervous system settles during a sound bath, deeper sleep often follows that night and in the days after. Clients with a racing mind at bedtime frequently notice the difference.

Emotional Release & Clarity

Sound creates the conditions where emotional weight that is hard to name or talk through has somewhere to go. Many people leave a session feeling lighter and more grounded.

Sound healing for stress

Sound healing supports clients moving through stress, tension, and emotional overwhelm as a complement to medical or mental-health care. It is not a substitute for professional treatment.

Group or Private

Group sound bath or private session?

When most people picture a sound bath, they picture a group: a room of mats, a shared soundtrack, everyone receiving the same wash of sound at once. Group sound baths are wonderful, and they are a beautiful introduction to the practice. A private session is a different experience of the same modality.

  • A group sound bath

One practitioner plays for the whole room. The sound is shared, the setting is communal, and it is an easy, low-cost way to try a sound bath for the first time.

  • A private sound bath at Word of Mouth

The instruments, the pacing, and the arc of the session are shaped entirely around you: your history, your body, and your intention for the day. We call it our Intentional Attunement Process, and no two sessions run the same.

  • Two practitioners, one room

Jaime and Yonatan are a married team of Certified Reiki Master Teachers who practice together. Reiki energy work can be layered into a sound bath when you want it.

Good Questions

Sound baths, answered

Honest answers about what a sound bath is, what to expect, and what it can and cannot do.

A sound bath is an immersive sound experience. You lie down fully clothed, close your eyes, and let waves of sound and vibration from instruments like singing bowls, gongs, tamboura, chimes, and live music move through the room and through you. Nothing touches you and there is nothing you need to do. A typical sound bath runs 60 to 90 minutes, and most people leave deeply relaxed.
At our studio the instruments include singing bowls, gongs, tamboura, chimes, piano, vocals, bells, and ocean drums, all played live in the room. Crystal bowl sound healing is one of the most recognizable elements. Some sound practitioners also use tuning forks; every studio builds its own palette of instruments.
A sound bath usually runs 60 to 90 minutes. Wear comfortable clothing. You stay fully clothed and lie down for most of the session, so soft layers and anything you can relax in work best. Nothing needs to come off.
They overlap, but they are not the same. In meditation you direct your own attention. In a sound bath, live sound and vibration do much of that work for you, which is why many people who find silent meditation difficult settle more easily here. We compare the two in depth on our sound healing vs meditation page.
At a group event, one practitioner plays for the whole room and everyone shares the same sound. At our studio, a private sound bath is shaped entirely to you: your history, your body, and your intention for the day. It is the difference between a concert and a private performance. Both are valuable. See our private sound bath page for more.
Sound healing is gentle and non-invasive and suits most people. It is a complementary practice that works alongside medical and mental-health care, not a substitute for it, and it does not diagnose or treat any condition. If you are pregnant, have a cardiovascular condition, a seizure disorder, or are in early recovery from surgery, call us before booking at (775) 618-5531 so we can talk it through.
Private sound healing sessions at our West Hollywood studio run $250 to $350 for 60 to 90 minutes, including breathwork, a ceremonial tea ritual, and live instruments played for you. See our sound healing cost breakdown for the full picture.
