How do you become a Reiki Master?
You become a Reiki Master by completing three levels of training in order: Level 1 for self-healing foundations, Level 2 for the practitioner symbols and distance healing, and the Master attunement that completes the path. The Short Answer
How to become a Reiki Master: the short answer
Becoming a Reiki Master means moving through three levels of training, in order, in the traditional Usui system. Level 1 teaches self-healing foundations and the first attunements. Level 2 is the practitioner level, where you learn the reiki symbols and distance healing. Reiki Master Training gives the Master-level attunements, teaching practices, and mentorship that complete the path. Each level builds on the one before it, so the Master attunement is not a shortcut you can skip to. It is the final step of a sequence.
The path takes a minimum of several months and often a year or more, because most students practice between levels rather than rushing straight through. At Word of Mouth in West Hollywood, every level is an in-person intensive led by Jaime and Yonatan Elkayam, married Certified Reiki Master Teachers in the Usui lineage. Reiki is a complementary practice. It is not medical or mental-health care, and it does not diagnose or treat any condition.
Your Path
The path to becoming a Reiki Master
Reiki master training is a sequence, not a single class. Here is each step in order, from your first attunement to teaching others.

Reiki Level 1 certification
The foundation. A weekend intensive with 12+ guided hours covering the founding principles, your first attunements, hand positions, chakra basics, meditations, and breathwork. Level 1 is about self-healing, and it is where every Reiki Master begins.

Reiki Level 2 training
The practitioner level. You learn the five reiki symbols, distance healing, and emotional and mental healing work, with advanced attunements that deepen what Level 1 opened. This is the generally accepted standard for offering sessions to others.

The Reiki Master attunement
Reiki Master Training brings the Master-level attunements and the Master symbol. This is the step that makes you a Reiki Master, along with the teaching practices and personalized mentorship that come with it.

Teaching and passing it on
Our Master track leads to certification as a Reiki Master Teacher, so you can attune and teach new students yourself. This is where you carry the Usui lineage forward for the next set of practitioners.
Most students practice for a stretch between each level rather than moving straight through. The pace is yours, and it usually spans several months to a year or more.

What a Reiki Master actually is
The word Master sounds grand, so it helps to be precise about what it means in the Usui tradition. Here is what the title does and does not carry.
A Reiki Master has the Master attunement
A Reiki Master has received the Master-level attunement and the Master symbol, completing the traditional path. It marks the full transmission of the Usui system, not a claim of perfection.
A Reiki Master Teacher can attune and teach
The Master Teacher level adds the ability to attune and train new students. That is the difference between practicing at the Master level and passing the lineage on. Our track leads to Master Teacher certification.
It honors a lineage
Each attunement is passed from teacher to student in an unbroken line back to the Usui tradition. Becoming a Master means you now hold and continue that lineage.

How Training Works
How reiki master training works at our West Hollywood studio
Reiki is felt as much as it is taught, so we keep the whole path in person, in a real studio, with two Master Teachers holding the room.
Two Master Teachers, not one
You learn from Jaime and Yonatan, a married pair of Certified Reiki Master Teachers who teach side by side, so two lineages of experience are in the room at every level.
In-person attunements and mentorship
Master-level attunements and guided practice happen face to face in our Melrose studio, with personalized mentorship built into the Master track. We do not offer online-only certification.
Clear tuition, payment plans
Reiki Level 1 starts at $550 and Reiki Master Training starts at $750, with Usui Master Teacher certification included. Payment plans are available for both.

Some schools offer online reiki training, and it exists across the field. At Word of Mouth we keep attunements and guided practice in person at our Melrose studio in West Hollywood, because we believe presence matters for attunement work. We currently do not offer online-only certification.

There is no single federal accreditation body for reiki certification in the US. Our certificates document successful completion of each level and are issued by Certified Reiki Master Teachers in the Usui lineage. Graduates can optionally affiliate with professional organizations such as the IARP or ICRT, and should check local licensing rules before offering paid sessions.
