The Practice

Is reiki spiritual, or is it something else?

Reiki is not a religion. It does not ask you to adopt a belief system, join a tradition, or accept any spiritual framework you do not already hold. That is worth saying plainly, because a lot of people hesitate at the word "spiritual," and rightfully so. It can mean anything from grounded and embodied to a sense that you are about to be sold something.

Reiki is a Japanese energy-healing technique rooted in the Usui lineage. In practice, a trained practitioner works with the body's energy system through light touch or hands held above the body, often supporting relaxation, inner quiet, and a sense of being held. What many people call spiritual about it is the quality of that stillness, a felt sense of presence that most modalities do not reach. You can hold that experience inside your existing faith tradition, or outside any tradition at all.

Whatever Your Path

How reiki supports spiritual growth, whatever you believe

A session does not ask you to arrive with a belief system already in place. It meets you where you are, secular, devout, or somewhere in between, and works with the body first.

  • For secular seekers

You do not need to believe in energy fields or chakras to benefit from a session. Many clients come with zero spiritual vocabulary and leave describing something that felt real, with no theological framework required.

  • For religious practitioners

Reiki is compatible with Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, and Muslim practice, among others. It makes no doctrinal claims and does not compete with prayer, scripture, or any other tradition.

  • For those between traditions

If you have outgrown a previous practice or faith and have not found the next one, reiki offers a gentle, non-dogmatic container for that in-between. No one will try to convert you.

  • A combined practice stack

Clients who want more than one session a month often layer in breathwork and sound healing alongside reiki, or bring the work into daily life with somatic coaching, all under one roof with the same practitioners.

What a reiki session for spiritual growth feels like

1

You arrive and settle in

Our private loft off Melrose feels nothing like a temple and nothing like a clinic. You arrive, you settle, and nothing starts until you are ready.

2

A brief breathwork opening

Your practitioner begins with a short breathwork practice that helps your nervous system come out of the day before the reiki work starts.

3

The session unfolds

Some clients feel warmth or tingling. Some feel stillness. Some fall asleep. Whatever happens, your practitioner stays present and tracking throughout.

4

You leave lighter

Most clients feel grounded, more present, and lighter, qualities that tend to spill into how they show up in the rest of their life.

The biggest lessons I have learned are that play and joy can be the foundation that supports us through the hard stuff, and that personal development and growth do not have to be painful.

Good Questions

Reiki for spiritual growth, answered

Honest answers about belief, religion, meditation, and what spiritual growth actually feels like in a session.

No. Reiki is not a religion and requires no belief system. You do not need to believe in chakras, energy fields, or any spiritual concept to receive a session or benefit from one. We work with the body. The interpretation is yours.
Yes, to all of them. Reiki makes no doctrinal claims. Many Christian practitioners frame the work as a form of prayer or healing ministry, and that interpretation stays between you and your faith community. The concept of life-force energy also has resonance in Kabbalistic tradition for Jewish practitioners. Reiki's founder, Mikao Usui, studied in a Buddhist context, though reiki itself is not a Buddhist practice, and secular practitioners often find the body-based stillness more accessible than meditation apps or conceptual spirituality.
Meditation is a self-directed practice, while reiki is practitioner-led. In a reiki session, you do not have to do anything. You receive. Many clients find it easier to reach deep stillness in a reiki session than in their own meditation practice, especially at the beginning.
Most clients describe it as felt, not thought, a sense of settling, presence, inner quiet, or space that was not there before. Over multiple sessions, clients often notice changes in how they carry themselves, how they relate to others, and how they respond to difficulty.
No. A session is complete on its own. That said, many spiritually oriented clients eventually pursue Reiki Level 1 Certification as a way to build a self-practice. Explore Level 1 Certification.
There is no required frequency. Some clients come monthly, some come weekly during periods of change or growth. Your own sense of it is the best guide.
A session is a healing or wellness experience where your practitioner works with your energy system. An attunement is part of reiki training, a transmission that opens the student's capacity to channel reiki. Attunements happen in Level 1, Level 2, and Master training; they are not part of a regular session.
