The Foundation
What is Reiki Level 1 certification?
Reiki Level 1, sometimes called Shoden, is the foundation of Reiki practice. You learn to channel life-force energy through the hands, using it first on yourself and then on friends and family. The Level 1 intensive covers attunements, hand positions, basic chakra awareness, meditations, and breathwork.
You leave with a completed certification, a practice manual, and a self-healing routine you can use every day. No prior experience with Reiki or energy work is required. This is the starting point, not a prerequisite for anything specific to come next.

The weekend covers attunements, hand positions, and chakra basics, alongside guided meditations and breathwork integration. You leave with a 21-day self-practice protocol and a written practice manual.

The attunement is a ceremonial transmission from teacher to student. Jaime and Yonatan guide each student individually through the process, then support your practice as it becomes a daily habit.

Practice daily self-Reiki
Spend 20 minutes on yourself each morning or evening using the hand positions from class. Consistency matters more than duration.

Offer informal sessions
Practice on willing friends and family. You are not charging yet, and that is fine. You are building sensitivity and confidence.

Keep a practice journal
Note what you notice during sessions. Patterns emerge over weeks of tracking, and those observations will deepen your Level 2 work.

Meet your Reiki Master Teachers
Jaime Elkayam is a Certified Reiki Master Teacher, Energy Medicine Practitioner, Certified Breathwork Facilitator, and Somatic Facilitator. Yonatan Elkayam is a Certified Reiki Master Teacher, Certified Breathwork Facilitator, Classical Pilates Instructor, and musician with 30 years of vibrational study.
They are married, and they teach together. Students who train with both describe the experience as having two lineages in the room: Jaime's somatic and energetic depth and Yonatan's musical and breathwork grounding. Word of Mouth has been training practitioners and self-healers in Los Angeles for over 10 years.

An attunement is a ceremonial transmission from your Reiki Master Teachers to you. It opens your channel for Reiki energy. What you feel varies. Some students notice warmth, tingling, or visual imagery. Others feel a quiet sense of settling. The attunement is considered valid regardless of what you do or don't feel in the moment.
Yes. After Level 1 you can give informal sessions to people in your life. Most Reiki teachers, including ours, suggest not charging for sessions until Level 2, since Level 2 covers the practitioner symbols and protocols needed for professional-grade work.
No prior experience is needed. Level 1 is designed for complete beginners. If you have received sessions before, that is a helpful context, but it is not required.
There is no single accreditation body for Reiki in the US. Our certificates document completion of Level 1 requirements under Certified Reiki Master Teachers in the Usui lineage and are recognized within the broader Reiki community. If you plan to affiliate with an organization like the IARP or ICRT, you can do so after certification.
No. Reiki practice is not connected to any religion or required belief system. Students from many different faith backgrounds, and from none, train and practice Reiki. The Usui tradition has its own five principles, which are practical rather than religious.
There is no required waiting period. Most teachers recommend taking time to build a consistent self-practice first, typically a few months. We recommend Level 2 when you feel genuinely settled in your Level 1 work, not on a fixed schedule. Learn about Reiki Level 2.
